On April 30, 2024

In the dynamic landscape of the logistics industry, ability and meticulousness reign supreme. However, often touted as a male-dominated industry, it significantly underestimates the role of women. Breaking stereotypes and defying norms, women are playing a pivotal role in reshaping the industry with their unique capabilities and perspectives.

In recent times, there has been a noticeable change in the logistics industry, as more and more women are getting involved. Although it has traditionally been viewed as a male-dominated sector, women are now making their presence felt by challenging the norms and bringing about positive changes from the inside. As of 2018, women make up about 20% of the logistics workforce in India.

Historically, women have encountered many challenges in a male-dominated workplace. However, as more women have become a part of the workforce, there is a positive shift underway. This shift not only fosters empowerment but also contributes to the creation of a safer and more supportive environment for all employees. As women take on more prominent roles in the logistics sector, they bring with them a collaborative spirit that promotes a culture of inclusivity and mutual support.

Leadership in Action

In leadership roles, women are breaking barriers and inspiring others with their exceptional leadership qualities. Their diverse array of skills, perspectives, and qualities bring about positive outcomes and enrich the organisational culture. Women tend to have high levels of empathy and emotional intelligence that allow them to empathise with the needs of their team members. Their collaborative attitude encourages participation and innovation at the workplace and leads to better performances. Their ability to navigate tough situations with resilience and adaptability makes them better leaders.

On Ground Change

Over the past decade, women have also taken on a myriad of roles in the logistics industry, more than ever before. Supply chain managers, call center operators, data scientists, and many other support functions. There is an overall trend of skill development for taking on various roles at all levels of the supply chain. Whether it is formal training or on-the-job experience, women are investing in their professional development.

Technological Innovations

Technological innovations have led to increased participation of women, as automated systems have made traditionally labor-intensive tasks. Technological innovations like cloud-based solutions and other digital platforms enable remote work, allowing women to balance other priorities. The delivery of training and educational programs now takes place through online webinars and virtual workshops that also help in upskilling. Overall, technological innovations have not only changed the way the logistics industry operates but also changed the way it retains and upskills its talent.

Advocates of Change

Women are catalysts of change – whether it is technology, work culture, or sustainability. They promote change through technological innovation, diversity, and sustainability. Their dedication to creating a better tomorrow for all leads to positive outcomes when it comes to integrating eco-friendly measures and efficient resource management. They are instrumental in shaping a brighter, greener future.

What needs to be done?

Despite improvements, the industry is still finding its feet when it comes to promoting inclusivity and gender diversity. It is essential to include women at all the levels of employment and not limit them to traditional roles like HR and Admin. There is specifically a need to create a safe environment to promote more female participation in the transportation industry. Organisations need to promote the development of technical skills and make serious efforts to bring inclusive work environments across the board. Flexible work environments, good health and sanitation facilities, advocacy, and awareness can speed up inclusivity in logistics.

At FM Logistic India, we recognise the invaluable contributions made by women who form an integral part of our workforce. We believe that diversity will drive innovation and success. We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment to all our women employees. We prioritise their well-being and maintain strict policies against discrimination. We strive to create a more diverse and equitable industry. By empowering women and encouraging their professional development, we aim to build a brighter future for all our employees, customers, and stakeholders.
